Why Unschool?

April 2, 2015 By Racheous

When I’m asked why we unschool, it’s hard to explain without generalisations. It’s hard to capture the reasons because there’s no short answer. It’s the little things, it’s the big things, it’s the things we inadvertently take for granted.

It’s the sleep ins, the days unfolding naturally and slowly.

It’s freedom. Freedom to play, explore, make mistakes, take risks.

Freedom to learn what they want and explore their interests. Truly personalised learning that is consensual and joyful.

It’s the freedom and time to master things – to fail and try again and again without pressure.

It’s a lifestyle that embraces and celebrates family. A lifestyle where parent-child and sibling relationships are nourished and developed at all times.

021

It’s a life filled with authentic friendships and social interaction with people of a variety of ages.

It’s time. Time to tinker, be bored, to daydream. The time to play and play and play.

It’s the ability to express their learning as it works for them.

It’s learning as part of life where things are not time dependent.

001

It’s a lack of pressure. It’s a childhood free from conformity or testing.

That’s not to say that schooled or schooled-at-home children cannot experience these things but that I’ve chosen this path because of its focus on these elements.

We unschool because we love learning with and from one another. I love being able to be there beside them learning and living. I love how we get to see more of who they are without external influences.

We unschool because we are living this life and it’s incredible and we couldn’t imagine it any other way.

Thanks again. Your posts on homeschooling are really helping a lot with this decision about whether or not to homeschool.

I really like this post and I find all the things you describe amazing and so left behind by our conventional education system. Although I find the idea of homeschooling (not sure what unschooling is) really intriguing and part of me would love it for my little girl another part of me that comes from a country where homeschooling doesn’t exists and recently moved a new country (that does) finds it so very scary.
